Scrum Vs SAFe: What’s the Basic Difference?

 There are many frameworks helping organizations execute a particular set of tasks. For the last couple of years, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and Scrum are functioning under the principles of Agile.


With the implementation of these two frameworks, there are some finite sets of differences between the two. These two terms often create confusion among newbies and professionals. So, it is better to have a clear idea about the two terms which are being widely used among the top professionals.


What is Scrum?


Scrum is a framework where people can address a complex set of adaptive problems while they are designing a product of higher values. On the other side, it is an iterative method of product development that breaks down a complex project into smaller segments which is completed by cross-functional teams defined within a limited time frame. 


This technique focuses primarily on the rhythm of the delivery and relies on the cross-functional teams who can deliver the best for their teams.


There are primarily three roles in Scrum i.e. Scrum Master, Product Owner. 

 

What is SAFe 


SAFe stands for Scaled Agile Framework. It is a framework that involves the entire enterprise and not just a team within the organization.


There are basically three levels within the organization i.e. Portfolio, program, and team. This concept is widely accepted within the organization. There are three important parts of SAFe mentioned below:- 


  • Lean-Agile Development

  • Agile Software Development 

  • System Thinking


Basic differences between Scrum and SAFe are mentioned Below:- 



Scrum

SAFe

(1.) Limited to cross-functional teams and deal with small projects.   

(2.) Deals with big teams situated across various locations.  

(2.) Middle management has no role to play in middle. 

(2.) Program and portfolio management are important tiers of SAFe 

(3.) Scrum framework consists of Scrum teams and roles. 

(3.) The SAFe framework consists of large agile teams, to manage large portfolios within the organization.      

(4.) It is a light framework that addresses the concerns related to product development.    

(4.) It is a framework targeted to enable to Business agility of an enterprise.   

(5.) Works best when companies are working on a single organizational structure. 

(5.) Best suited for large teams working within the organization. 

   


The Final Thoughts


The two frameworks have completely changed the work culture within the organizations. Either organizations have small teams or they have large teams working collectively to execute a particular set of tasks, they have options to implement as per the requirement and complications of the projects.
