What is Sprint Planning?

In the Scrum Agile Framework a sprint planning is a meeting conducted before the start of a sprint. The main objective of the meeting is to establish the product development goal and plans for the upcoming sprint. Sprint Planning includes the number of backlog items in the sprint that is handled by the development team.

The product owner decides the priority features for the team members. The entire team attends the sprint plan meeting so that there is transparency among team members.

The Main Objective of Sprint Planning

During Agile development process sprint planning is used to accomplish the tasks mentioned below:-

(1.) Scrum planning is used by the product owner, Scrum Master and development team  to prioritize items in the product backlog.

(2.) Development team is responsible for reviewing the technical aspects of every item and decide their feasibility.

(3.) The detailed planning for backlog items is completed by the development team. They break down the user stories into individual development and testing tasks.

(4.) The team members estimate the size of user stories with the help of scrum estimation techniques such as planning poker.

Advantages of Sprint Planning

An effective Sprint Planning helps the team in the following ways mentioned below:-

(1.) Provides a Communication Platform for Development Team

The team members get an opportunity to identify their dependencies and capacity to achieve their goals during the current sprint.

(2.) Prioritize the deliverables

The product owner helps to prioritize the backlogs of the important items at the top. The scrum team is responsible to prioritize the backlogs and break them into smaller pieces. By doing so the most important features of the system can be easily delivered in the early stages of the sprint.

(3.) Avoids third Party Interference

With sprint planning the team members are flexible to select achievable goals for current sprint based on their capabilities. This avoids the third party such as managers from other teams from setting unachievable goals.
